French semiotician and cultural critic. One of his most important works in the field of semiotics is the identification of two types of signified, CONNOTATION and DENOTATION.

Denotation is described as the literal, obvious or commonsense meaning of the sign (the signified part of the sign).

*Has the North American currency value of one.
* Equals 100 cents. 20 nickels.
10 dimes. 4 quarters.

*the face of George Washington is in one side, an unfinished pyramid and the American eagle on the other, etc...

Connotation refers to the denotative value plus personal associations.

To me the common connotative attribute of the DOLLAR is its monetary value against the Mexican peso. This is a value that changes according to the economy in my country and in the world.
